Helping keep plastic pollution out of waterways

We helped Sydney Water tackle the issue of bottled water by connecting people with the impact of plastic waste on our waterways and beaches. After all when you see the problem, then help pick it up, you rethink buying the plastic to begin with.

Volunteers were invited to enjoy the beats of local DJs, while cleaning up plastic pollution from two popular beaches where we launched the initiative.
And, up and coming Sydney musicians (Haiku Hands) created the exclusive track ‘Come Clean’ just for the event.

The volunteers then received a limited edition vinyl, made of recycled marine debris, pressed on the spot with the track.

For UNICEF, supporting children in developing countries often involves giving them a blue backpack. Everything they need to start and succeed at school.

On World Children’s Day, we took the iconic blue backpack and placed it on statues of children across the world.

Around Australia, statues of children wear the blue UNICEF backpack with the message, #PackForTheFuture, to raise awareness of the need to equip every child, everywhere with the education they deserve. In Parramatta, a statue of Sir John Martin – a child whose determination to get an education took him from servant’s son to NSW Premier and Chief Justice of the NSW Supreme Court – wears the backpack as a symbol of the transformative power of education. Even in New York, the famous Fearless Girl wears the #PackForTheFuture backpack to inspire people to stand up for children’s education.

By placing the backpacks in the public eye, UNICEF shares its message with the world – that when we equip children with what they need to succeed, we give them hope, allow them to dream, and help them live the best possible futures they can.

The concept of #PackForTheFuture has also been brought to life through a free photography exhibition at the Sydney Opera House, on the Western Broadwalk until 21 November. It features children from 22 countries, from Syria to Somalia, and the Rohingya refugee camps of Bangladesh to the South Pacific. In each photo, the UNICEF backpack is part of their story. Filled with pens, notebooks – and hope – the blue backpack often becomes the most treasured possession these children own.

Land clearing is one of the leading causes of species extinction in NSW. The cruelty and scale of this holocaust is difficult to imagine.

According to WWF, land clearing kills more than 200,000 mammals each year in NSW.

The total number of all kinds of animals killed, including mammals, birds, lizards and frogs is much higher than that number – possibly more than 1 million a year.

The animals either die by being crushed to death when trees fall, or else die of  injuries sustained during land-clearing operations.

Clearing is usually done by bulldozers because it is much faster than using chainsaws. The bulldozers either use the blade to push down individual trees, or else two bulldozers connected by a heavy chain drive through the forest pulling down trees caught in the chain, often hundreds of trees an hour.

Many animals die from injuries when the trees they nesting in fall to the ground. Others slowly starve to death because their food supplies have been destroyed.

Some people ask why the animals can’t simply escape escape to other forests. The sad truth is that most that flee the carnage and make it to another forest or woodland die because those areas are already fully occupied by animals that will fight invaders to protect their home territories.

The new laws that the Baird government plans to introduce will significantly increase this carnage and should not be allowed.

STOP BAIRD'S LAND CLEARING LAWS. SAVE OUR WILDLIFE.

STEP 1: You're killing more than trees - what's the life behind our trees.

STEP 2: You're throwing away our wildlife.
